St. Patrick's Day on Pi Day

It was so much fun to celebrate two holidays in tot school this week. Everything was green and filled with thoughts of pi. Our second week of tot school was a little more rough with tears than our first week, but I fully expect them all to find that playing in tot school is a blast. They are all such sweethearts and I look forward to learning and growing with them all year.

Our sensory bin was filled with green play dough and split peas. There was much scooping and dumping with spoons and bowls. One of the favorite past times at the sensory table is to pour all of the sensory item down the hole in the middle of the table. We added a bucket under the table and now they fill the bucket!

Some of our other activities included painting, stamping, tearing paper, playing outside with chalk and balls, and building with castle blocks. I can't wait to explore our animals theme next week!

St. Patrick's Day

What a great St. Patrick's Day celebration we had in school today! We scooped and dumped green rice while listening to stories about St. Patrick's Day. We made shamrock art out of heart shaped stamps and made green paint from yellow and blue.

We had green smoothie muffins for snack and then sorted and counted the different pieces of Lucky Charms cereal. At the end of the day we learned all about the Penny. We sang this song:

"Which coin is in my pocket, pocket?

What's in my pocket worth one cent?

It's a shiny penny, penny.

It's a penny, worth one cent."

This afternoon we moved our caterpillar chrysalis' to the butterfly home and inspected how they had changed. We also got a good look at ladybugs that had turned into the pupa stage and some that had hatched out as beetles. We even saw two hatch out as yellow beetles. Did you know that many varieties of ladybugs start off yellow and then become red with spots within hours?

We also got our hands all covered in paint and made shamrock handprints with those painted hands. We sorted and counted Lucky Charms, worked on our numbers up to 20 and read tons of stories about St. Patrick's Day.

Preschool St. Patrick's Day

We had a great day in preschool for St. Patrick's Day. We spent some time really focused on identifying our colors since we spent so much time talking about the color green. We talked about how many of us were wearing different shades of green. There is dark green and light green and they are all called green. We started the day with a big sheet of paper and 2 drops of paint: blue and yellow. When we mixed and painted we made it into green. We started learning Mary Had A Little Lamb on the piano and it was quite a struggle for us to master the first line pattern (CBABCCC). We'll keep working on it, though it will take us longer than we originally planned for. We also worked on identifying a cylinder with two circles (one on top, one on bottom) and a rectangle that wraps around them. We continued working on our reading: practicing the short /e/ sound and recognizing lowercase b and d. We started a new game during our reading time that switches the way we've been looking at the written print. Instead of looking at the written letter and making the sound it said we said a word (starting with -at) and stretched it in the air (figuratively with our hands). Then we talked about what sounds we heard /a/-/t/ and wrote down the symbols that represented the sounds we heard. It's a different strategy that starts representing how we can figure out how to write words. We had a great day and we're learning lots!

Tot School St. Patrick's Day

It is so fun to learn and play with the St. Patrick's Day theme. We celebrated a tad early this year simply so we could celebrate before it actually came. We played with the clover activity on Starfall.com on the SmartBoard and the toddlers got a kick out of the song at the end. They danced to it and then would play it over and over again. We read a few books about St. Patrick's Day and really worked on naming colors in our circle time. (I focused on colors since there was so much green happening throughout the day already.) We made a fun shamrock art with contact paper and green tissue paper. We also played with green noodles and green stamps. A heart shape stamp makes great shamrock leaves.

St. Patrick's Day - Thursday Tot School

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! We had so much fun in school today coloring, painting, exploring our sensory table, reading books and playing with our large blocks and slide. I forgot to grab green lentils, so we played with red lentils on a big oil pan.

We explored some 3D shapes with St. Patrick's Day artwork. I like to create these shapes with Velcro on the edges so that they can be taken apart and reassembled over and over.

We love playing with our large foam blocks and practicing walking up and down the ramps.

We painted short sections of paper towel tube with green paint as a St. Patrick's Day bracelet.

We had a very fun art project today! I took a piece of clear contact paper and attached a white frame around the edge so it left a sticky section in the middle. We used pre-cut pieces of green tissue paper to create a stained glass window. They turned out awesome!

Wednesday Preschool - St. Patrick's Day

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day is always so much fun. Kids are really a fan of the large motor hopping game that's in the St. Patrick's Day preschool pack. We play this game throughout the year. It starts simply with just jumping from spot to spot until you get to the end. Then we count each jump along the way. Now, we're ready for something more difficult. It's like a human sized board game. We roll the dice and jump that many spaces and repeat until we get to the end. Preschooler LOVE this!

We're still working very hard on learning what a good reader does. (Look, Point, Say the Sounds, Listen to the Sounds) I have a word at the top of the board with a green light on the left hand side (to indicate the starting position) and a red light on the right hand side to indicate the ending position. Then we practice sounding out the words.

We're learning about the piano right now and how to play a pattern on a piano. There is a great webpage that has a piano that words wonderfully on the SmartBoard.

As we work on identifying 3D shapes we're exploring if they roll down a slide, bounce, or slide.

St. Patrick's Day - Tuesday Tot School

St. Patrick's Day! Check out these awesome heart stamping shamrocks that we made. What a fun St. Patrick's Day craft!

We ate peppers cut sideways so they would look like shamrocks. They were so cute on the plate.

We're exploring some 3D shapes and their differences. EH was trying so hard to get the sphere to balance on top of the half sphere. I feel like that's a lesson that can only be learned by trying it over and over again.

Here is our awesome St. Patrick's Day art activity. We took clear contact paper, added a white paper frame, and then stuck pre-cut tissue paper all over the sticky side to make a stained glass window art project.

We also made these super cute bracelets from paper towel roll and some foam shamrock shapes from the dollar store.

I create all of my lesson plans to share digitally with other homeschooling families and small classrooms. If your child attends Little Adventures Preschool you can easily supplement their learning at home by downloading the lesson plans. It will also give you a good idea about what we covered. I always plan more than we will ever actually get to so there is often a great idea within the plans that you can share with your child to extend their learning. Tot Packs 29-32 Tot packs are about 20 pages in length. They each have 2 pages of activity ideas, book suggestions, and links to the materials I use. You can certainly use all or part of the lesson plans. The printable pages include songs, matching games, drawing games and other activities. Tot packs are designed to be a first introduction to math concepts, letters, shapes and colors. They are not meant to obtain mastery in any subject. Let them be a guide for educational play between you and your child.
