Thanksgiving - Monday Preschool

Last Monday our preschool theme was all about the things we are thankful for.  We talked about how being thankful for something means it makes you happy.  There was a strong focus on non-materialistic things like the sun, smiles and hugs, and friends playing nicely together.
We continued our study of words and I introduced the idea that words can have different lengths and still be a word.  A word has to have meaning on its own, and can be long with a lot of letters and sounds, or short with just a few letters and sounds.  This is in preparation for introducing syllables.

As we learn to read it is important to be able to visually differentiate words.  We played with the Do-A-Dot markers to mark all of the words in our letter L book.  The idea was that they were to mark the word "the" the same color throughout the page, same concept with the words "is" and "last".
We played the turkey grid game in math time.  Roll a dice and take that number of counters to cover that number of turkey pictures.  IE: If you roll a "3" take 3 counters (poker chips, pennies, etc) and cover 3 turkey pictures.  When you cover all of the turkeys you are a winner!  We don't play this game against each other.  Each person is playing individually on their board and when they reach 10 they dump off the counters and play again.
We also made an ear of corn out of green and yellow paper.  Kids cut the paper and glued it together themselves.  Then we made fingerprints to represent the kernels of corn and texture on the leaves.

We're continuing to work on tempo and rhythm in music.  They LOVE playing with the rhythm sticks and tapping them to the beat.  We're getting better as a class to tap them all on the beat.
Preschool B is working on some new sight words and word families.  They are doing excellent at blending single consonant and short vowel words.  They are also picking up their sight words better than I had expected.  We'll be ready for Level 2 of Ready2Ready in late January or early February.

Snack time was an artistic adventure as we turned apples, Cheerios, craisins, and candy into turkeys.

We're spending November talking about 2D shapes and the different attributes that the shapes have.  They are starting to recognize angles, corners, straight and round edges.

Scarecrows - Tot School Thursday

We had so much fun with the tot packs on Thursday!  We did a lot of coloring and multiple kids went home with marker markings on their faces :)

Yes, my own child, EMan, was the first to intentionally draw on his head for a reaction...

LilGalP and LilGalB enjoyed being rocked back and forth by EMan.

We made adorable toilet paper roll scarecrows.

We also learned a little bit about folding while we made our flippy floppy hats.
We learned the song Dingle Dangle Scarecrow and did all the actions:
"I'm a dingle dangle scarecrow with a flippy floppy hat.  I can shake my hands like this and I can shake my feet like that!"

Preschool - Scarecrows

Monday I took a planning day (no school) to catch up on writing down my lesson plans and remember Veterans Day (observed).  Wednesday we were back in action learning the letter L and all about scarecrows. We made really cute dancing scarecrows and practiced the sight word "I" and blending the sounds in the word "last".

Snack was delicious, thanks MissT for bringing it!
Next we worked on the L the Lizard art from the Amazing Action Alphabet.
We started playing a sorting game called "Guess My Secret Rule".
In the game, you put together a set of 4 items, 3 have a matching attribute and the last one doesn't match.  You have to guess what the secret rule was and what item doesn't match.  Try playing it at home!

We will be playing this game with attribute blocks, but before encouraging them to create sets with the blocks we just played with them to discover their attributes.

Preschool B is on a roll!  We're close to knowing the first 25 sight words solidly and will learn the last 15 of the set by early January (for the first 40 sight words - Dolch List).  We started playing a little game of Bingo with the last 18 words on our list to learn.
There is a great app by Bob Books for Apple products that I'd highly recommend.  It takes scenes from the Bob Books and makes them interactive.  It's fun because they recognize the pages from books they've read and as we keep playing they'll start finding those pages in the new books that they'll be reading.

Preschool B made dancing scarecrows as well.

We're working in November on identifying, sorting and classifying 2D shapes.  Start throwing the shape vocabulary into your conversations - be sure to use rhombus, hexagon and trapezoid.

Scarecrows - Tot School Tuesday

Today for tot school we learned all about scarecrows.  Our garden scarecrow came in for a visit.
Playing a color matching scarecrows game from the Scarecrows Tot Pack which is one of my favorites and full of fun activities.

EMan was dressing the scarecrow with the dress up shirts we had pulled out.

We made floppy scarecrow hats and sang the song:
"I'm a dingle dangle scarecrow with a flippy floppy hat.  I can shake my hands like this and I can shake my feet like that!"

We also played with feed corn scooping and dumping and having our toilet paper roll scarecrows protect the corn.
