This group of toddlers had a fantastic time this morning talking about Winter Holidays. We started with a gift wrapping station. They wrapped up a gift for mom and dad at home. I love teaching kids how to use tape. They get such a kick out of sticking the tape all over the wrapping paper.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We talked about how the New Year means that the Earth has gone around the Sun one whole time. I made these cut little spinning toys and the kids rotated the earth and then yelled, "Happy New Year!". We wore hats, blew blowers, and even shot out silly string.</div>

We had a little Santa's Workshop happening with the building toys in the basement and the cardboard house that we worked on coloring on the main floor.</div>

We had a great time this morning in tot school. We read the book "The Polar Express" and had a pajama day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had the sensory table set up with cotton ball and plush snowballs and encouraged the sweetest little snowball fight ever.<br /><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dwbvYqAqUEkBKrAwlD5GRDWF_1LJPIP9RglOUHRWIqZ3OCQXdtJiafuhrsDWWV-AXHD3fikcc4FvwSIGKvXFA' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We learned a new math game today. It's called a "Grid Game". I made a die that had dots for the numbers 1, 2, and 3 (twice each) out of a cube wooden block. We rolled the die and counted the dots, then we got that many counters and covered the same number of trains on our game board. When we covered all ten trains we were the winners! It's a simple game to play at home that makes a big difference in early understanding of quantity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We worked on our super secret holiday gifts after a snack time of hot chocolate and animal crackers. </div>

Some story time and playing with trains finished up our time together today. It was a blast!</div>

The Gingerbread theme in our house is no joke. It's a HUGE mess of AWESOME! It's also a delightful way to make my house smell delicious. We started off the day by playing a bit in the school room to make drop off consistent and normal. Then we headed to the kitchen for the rest of the day. Our first gingerbread activity was homemade gingerbread finger paint. I love making this finger paint. It is colored by spices and smells delicious! I even learned this year that I can make it in the microwave which means I can make it with my kindergarten class, yay!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Gingerbread Finger Paint, Combine in saucepan or glass bowl:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1/2 c. cornstarch</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3 T. sugar</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2 c. cold water</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 T. Cinnamon</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 T. Ginger</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1 T. Cloves</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cook together until thickened. The spices make it a brown color and it smells lovely! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To cook in the microwave: stir, cook 1 minute, repeat until thick. If you decide to add some food coloring, and leave out the spices for regular finger paint, just add a squirt of liquid dish detergent after cooking it and that helps the food coloring to not stain. I don't add the detergent when I don't add food coloring (like today).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhUjNcTKlZJ6Wms9aXhgkaybYLXUf1-9uPX7WyFAVlwQIio3rYo-Y6PjOA2rwJ9Z_b9RCUCw42V7uhuQNZz4wp98by6M30Oj3z0GMY9BcA0D5p92ih3ouc98br0SwRWuANt4zEG2-Aa9k/s1600/Dec+5+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1461" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhUjNcTKlZJ6Wms9aXhgkaybYLXUf1-9uPX7WyFAVlwQIio3rYo-Y6PjOA2rwJ9Z_b9RCUCw42V7uhuQNZz4wp98by6M30Oj3z0GMY9BcA0D5p92ih3ouc98br0SwRWuANt4zEG2-Aa9k/s400/Dec+5+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="365" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our next gingerbread activity was based on the book "Gingerbread Friends" by Jan Brett. In the book the gingerbread baby wants friends to play with. We made him friends by making 3 gingerbread friends all holding hands. Then we decorated them with crayons and stickers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
At snack time each child got a gingerbread cookie, some frosting, and goodies to decorate with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
After snack we played with gingerbread play dough. We haven't pulled out the play dough since summer camps and I was surprised that everyone was engaged for a half hour or longer until pickup. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Stir together the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large pot. Next add the water and oil. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Make sure to use a super duty spoon because once it gets thick it's like stirring play dough! When thick, remove from head and knead until smooth.</div>

We had such a fantastic time in tot school today! I love talking about all the things that animals do in winter time. We practiced saying some big words like "Hibernation" and "Adaptation" and "Migration". </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoXqXhnQADd7Q6EduiIu7hsXH-8R2EiVnqgzv9kUgempPkiePCxT2K12jMcGEVqliK_DOIIdQfUjkDMCkMlYdCynFdtgVzMifuFJydt71OOu88e7IZi27xVbXXHFdV7wOxP4427IAM0c/s1600/Nov+28+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoXqXhnQADd7Q6EduiIu7hsXH-8R2EiVnqgzv9kUgempPkiePCxT2K12jMcGEVqliK_DOIIdQfUjkDMCkMlYdCynFdtgVzMifuFJydt71OOu88e7IZi27xVbXXHFdV7wOxP4427IAM0c/s400/Nov+28+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: center;">We pretended we were animals in winter needing to do different things. We built "dens" to "hibernate" in, pretended to be butterflies flying somewhere warmer, and we pretended to hunt for food and grasses.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Because of how the weeks fall this month we were able to do our Scarecrows theme and Thanksgiving theme together this week. We started the day off by decorating our scarecrow hats and saying "Boo" to the stuffed animal crow. They thought that was a hilarious game. We also made handprint turkeys - be sure to check the binders for those gems!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0n9gJ44APPdBBO8GxqMUZJl5JESlyCNPrRCmh2TvQd31jG8uzFU2mdiH7_-ySuBsx1NIQj8pJ_pYwupNp-tp63RfK5UjnG-uclBxsL6qFcex7m-bG9aW6jUuiajTw68ucLOXfzC_O5Mg/s1600/Nov+14+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0n9gJ44APPdBBO8GxqMUZJl5JESlyCNPrRCmh2TvQd31jG8uzFU2mdiH7_-ySuBsx1NIQj8pJ_pYwupNp-tp63RfK5UjnG-uclBxsL6qFcex7m-bG9aW6jUuiajTw68ucLOXfzC_O5Mg/s400/Nov+14+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the favorite activities was making dancing scarecrows. They were pre-cut and assembled with mini brads to make the head, arms, and legs wiggle like they are dancing. I thought they turned out delightfully adorable! Have a great Thanksgiving, no tot school next week!</div>

<span style="font-family: "print clearly"; font-size: 14pt;">NOTE: This educational tot pack and activity day is meant as an introduction to Native Americans and Pilgrims. I have intentionally used the word Indian to introduce the letter I. Indian, however, is not an accurate description of Native Americans. For more information please <span class="MsoHyperlink" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://www.wisegeek.com/why-are-native-americans-called-indians.htm" style="color: purple;">see this link</a></span>. There are also many different tribes of Native Americans that have very different traditions. Though the Pilgrims were in contact with the Wampanoag, this pack introduces ideas from many different tribes.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

We had a fantastic morning in tot school yesterday. I have loved watching this group of children grow up- they really do grow and change so quickly. One thing that I'm noticing now is how they are developing the ability to play together, a developmental step just beyond playing side-by-side. I love how they are interacting and saying hello and goodbye to their friends by name.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWEZ3O8TKF936XtAId-et3VIWSYadk3hJZbgZ_XGPl8aDeZp5Gygifdo1k_LPPB572OJShHlMOIaTPw_x11FzEqD3GczdaHf3IfLCtKWmyvOR_d5WnB_IhBgTeMjeBYrdZJZFdlwmbnP0/s1600/Nov+7+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWEZ3O8TKF936XtAId-et3VIWSYadk3hJZbgZ_XGPl8aDeZp5Gygifdo1k_LPPB572OJShHlMOIaTPw_x11FzEqD3GczdaHf3IfLCtKWmyvOR_d5WnB_IhBgTeMjeBYrdZJZFdlwmbnP0/s400/Nov+7+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We made feather headbands and counted to four. We read stories about being thankful and Thanksgiving. We also built tons of buildings with blocks. One of our favorite activities was making petroglyphs by coloring on sandpaper (because carving rocks is a little out of our league right now). Last, but not least, we made a home made game with a popsicle stick, a string, and a circle of chenille stem. The idea is to hold the stick and try to get the circle around the stick by swinging it. We had such a fantastic day!<br />

Here are the basics:<br />
<br />
MakerSpace: Do you have a builder, crafter, or tinker-er that loves creating things? Imagine the cardboard challenge on hyperdrive and that’s what this three-hour camp is about. Makerspace is the creation of robots, cars, toys, and battery powered awesome. We will learn to connect basic motors to wheels, propellers, and gears onto student’s invented creations (made with recycled materials). We’ll learn about circuits and paper/cardboard crafting. Students will be bringing these inventions home to explore more and show you the amazing things they can immediately apply in their own home tinkering time. Students will need to bring cleaned recycled materials to class, no glass items please.<br />
<br />
EdScratch 1 (Robot Programming): Join Miss Amanda for EdScratch 1. Whether you’ve programmed before or not, this is a great starting place for students to learn to program robots. We’ll start with some robot basics, including teaching Edison to play soccer and move into introducing the EdScratch programming language. Building your first program in EdScratch is easy! Just drag and drop the blocks you want together. EdScratch is much more complicated than EdBlocks, however, so expect to challenge your brain to make Edison accomplish even more than what was possible in Miss Amanda’s summer camp series. Students will need to bring one Edison robot with fully charged batteries. If you don’t have your own Edison robot I have extras available for $40 each.<br />
<br />
EdScratch 2 (Robot Programming): Ready to dive in and really get programming your own robot? Join Miss Amanda for EdScratch 2. Using the vertical block-based visual programming language based on Scratch we’ll explore computational thinking, the input-process-output cycle and the parameters of inputs and outputs on Edison, grouping blocks (writing programming for Edison to do two things at once), bugs and debugging syntax and logical errors. Students will need to bring one Edison robot with fully charged batteries. If you don’t have your own Edison robot I have extras available for $40 each.<br />
<br />

We had so much fun this morning for Halloween! It was messy and exciting all day long! We learned the letter C and painted pumpkins!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZP0wUyBv_cCn0bh4ZadoXDlF_lsMYlYnEksB87arbe1MUIuI_klc-ogVy_lPHRnkvo2TvpNCVvk-kJjMrGC1SSgUuytW2-bmTSKyR_nSA8hzv0AFU9qodyFckvvMFOBenMkWU2okSvA/s1600/Oct+31+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="890" data-original-width="1600" height="353" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheZP0wUyBv_cCn0bh4ZadoXDlF_lsMYlYnEksB87arbe1MUIuI_klc-ogVy_lPHRnkvo2TvpNCVvk-kJjMrGC1SSgUuytW2-bmTSKyR_nSA8hzv0AFU9qodyFckvvMFOBenMkWU2okSvA/s640/Oct+31+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also explored mini pumpkins and gourds in our rice sensory table (how many cups of rice did you vacuum up today? I think I'm at 9 and counting....). We made footprint ghosts and handprint spiders as well. We played all sorts of dress ups and listened to some fun Halloween music. Happy Halloween everyone! </div>

We had such a blast today talking about Doctors and the letter H. We had out the baby dolls and 300 bandaids to start. I love having young kids play with bandaids. The fine motor skills required to open the package and put the sticky bandaid on something successfully is amazingly difficult. Plus, they have a ton of fun doing it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46jEjCH2_SimdIGdl8oFSPEpfU6JOtFag7UmrpSFXzWhFe_6xzTU4bBpsOLGmwpolizy97snPg0JH1RLw-CJ3h0SYeuKjsvKFV19tap-JXK5R0pQYpwbEIZ-olhnlZXgBIPsEgEglD88/s1600/Oct+24+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46jEjCH2_SimdIGdl8oFSPEpfU6JOtFag7UmrpSFXzWhFe_6xzTU4bBpsOLGmwpolizy97snPg0JH1RLw-CJ3h0SYeuKjsvKFV19tap-JXK5R0pQYpwbEIZ-olhnlZXgBIPsEgEglD88/s400/Oct+24+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had a pretend doctor visit and made charts of how tall everyone is (not exactly accurate, if you're wondering).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLA2-uqEb-NMahqJVEaVva4WoGbm4rAS5ZT0jIDldUFry3iQ4nm0DWUPYk_Cu4fTFlPF8yzXT5jJBpr5bBoiJHKgeGtJb3Sysbu_Xhzq1uM14PMsgSyGFGFCmJnX-F1ilCbRi42ZSPdZw/s1600/Oct+24+Tot+School+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLA2-uqEb-NMahqJVEaVva4WoGbm4rAS5ZT0jIDldUFry3iQ4nm0DWUPYk_Cu4fTFlPF8yzXT5jJBpr5bBoiJHKgeGtJb3Sysbu_Xhzq1uM14PMsgSyGFGFCmJnX-F1ilCbRi42ZSPdZw/s400/Oct+24+Tot+School+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also added our weight to the doctor chart (also, not accurate, but close). </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We had our first formal writing activity today as we practiced using pencils to trace the letter H. We learned the song "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" and had it playing on loop for about an hour for background noise. It was fun to listen to them sing along from time to time. </div>

Usually our Bubbles day is held outside, but with the chilly weather and snow we ended up inside and expanding it to Bubbles, Balloons, and Blocks. I also put together our October sensory bin of orange colored dry rice, plastic butter knives, Halloween erasers, and pumpkin buckets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAMT519kaXtrT6Q3VcFlINDOIKes-NVxQUoYpIDK4OpKMd-E7TluXXb0TaJDiLXLc-rX-KiGaVW0zvIv88BdJ0qTojmJ2v-CvNAdSFbusHgvhFHCjpqQEwIx4pM8KIs3pd5uFykl08Gm4/s1600/Oct+10+Tot+School+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAMT519kaXtrT6Q3VcFlINDOIKes-NVxQUoYpIDK4OpKMd-E7TluXXb0TaJDiLXLc-rX-KiGaVW0zvIv88BdJ0qTojmJ2v-CvNAdSFbusHgvhFHCjpqQEwIx4pM8KIs3pd5uFykl08Gm4/s400/Oct+10+Tot+School+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had another sensory bin set up in my kitchen. I ran some hot soapy water and scooped off the top layer of bubbles for the kids to play with in the sensory bin. It made for a nice scrubbing of the sensory bin - now it can say inside all winter.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We did turn on the bubble machine a few times in the basement. It was convenient that I planned to shampoo the carpets later this week - the timing is wonderful :). I don't have any great pictures of the balloons. We had 50 balloons over by the sofa that were used to kick and catch and throw all around. I wrote the letter B on them and we sang our song "This is the sound that B can make /b//b//b/, /b//b//b/, This is the sound that B can make in words like Bubble and Balloon" (Mulberry bush tune). </div>

Wow! We had so much fun this morning in tot school. We talked all about safety and made some super fun fire trucks out of cardboard boxes and paper plates. The kids worked really hard on them and were a bit sad to wait for them to dry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
We played with playdough and rode bicycles and pushed each other on the swing as well. </div>

We talked about nursery rhymes today in tot school. I would love for the kids to start learning them, so I sing them over and over whenever I can. Today, one of my kiddos told me, "Miss Amanda, you already sang that one." in a very exasperated voice. Hahaha! It was quite funny to me. We started the day with a little crayon drawing and water color resist painting. Eeks - which reminds me that their art is still hanging on the fence to dry. I best scamper back there and gather their books before they get ruined.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
We also played with bubbles and the knock over the cans game from back to school night. We went inside for a little bit today and mostly played with the musical instruments (as loudly as possible it seemed), Duplos, and wooden Pattern Blocks. Then we headed back outside to enjoy the sunshine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I loved learning about the letter A and talking about animals at Tot School when we met on Sept 19th. We started with playing outside as we have been doing for many weeks past. We played with animal hand puppets and animal finger puppets. After we washed our hands and had our snack we played downstairs for the rest of our time together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJdfVZcKDHpqBdWDTyBdyahFdT-oK-1Jw0-9zxpc9P_aed4iJLXjFfh_BG40irBN8tt77Vx6hmq6KRPlCuhKXAXJmnho4BYzcxHawhouYDFXSZL4G4ruYOFNYykO8bI7ozYu52L29Rylw/s1600/Tot+School+9-19+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJdfVZcKDHpqBdWDTyBdyahFdT-oK-1Jw0-9zxpc9P_aed4iJLXjFfh_BG40irBN8tt77Vx6hmq6KRPlCuhKXAXJmnho4BYzcxHawhouYDFXSZL4G4ruYOFNYykO8bI7ozYu52L29Rylw/s400/Tot+School+9-19+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We're transitioning to spending part of our time inside and part of our time outside so when the weather is crummy the kids aren't surprised by a different play location. We did animal puzzles, practiced the letter A book and colored it, and played with all sorts of toys!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Tot School was so much fun today. We learned the letter T and talked all about the dentist. We talked about our body parts and that we have teeth in our mouths. We decided that teeth are white and had a fun craft activity where we painted egg carton teeth white.</div>

We are also still working on counting to 5 and played our first "Hop Along the Path" game with the big number mats.<br />

Another fun activity we did was playing with colored masking tape and trying to put in on our papers. </div>

Yesterday I gained possession of a toddler lawn mower that blows bubbles. After tot school today I joked with a mom that maybe next week I'll have 7 of them - one per kiddo. They loved that thing, and would you believe that I REALLY want to take it apart and see how its designed? For real. All bubble blowers die really fast at my house, they get left out in the rain and are used so excessively that they are sticky and ruin the motor because they are unclean-able. This lawn mower comes with instructions to clean it out with the hose, so I have high hopes that it will live forever. I'd bet the kids have the same high hopes. I was a broken record today in regards to sharing the the bubble blowing lawn mower. "It's so-and-so's turn right now. I see that you'd like another turn. Wait just a minute and you can play again. That's how we share." ...and repeat. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPJ-bG-YneacLHOCoOeBSZf_l3tb4YanbcEISdmJ8QhLzyXzJEg4YS7cj13u-hLPS42TObzJybFaWOjUcMo8KkRwBHeOkVS3T4SQAqV67CwWMrHjoQXle7nklLmLQWR5uYCul6lbsTzBE/s1600/Tot+School+9-5+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1525" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPJ-bG-YneacLHOCoOeBSZf_l3tb4YanbcEISdmJ8QhLzyXzJEg4YS7cj13u-hLPS42TObzJybFaWOjUcMo8KkRwBHeOkVS3T4SQAqV67CwWMrHjoQXle7nklLmLQWR5uYCul6lbsTzBE/s400/Tot+School+9-5+1.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
We also painted, practiced knocking down the monster cans, and practiced pouring our own water at snack time after all washing up in the sink first. Everyone washing their hands is a parade of sorts. They get so excited about it. If you have a young child I highly suggest the hands-free foam soap dispensers. They are a life saver and the kids love to use them. After snack we played in the basement for about 30 minutes before heading outside again. Since it was so wet from the rain outside there were certain toys and books I wanted to share with the group but not leave on the wet grass all morning. We played puppets, read stories, explored the numbers 1-5, reviewed the letter M, and found extra toys to play with.<br />

The mini Hungry Hungry Hippos game (bottom left picture) is my favorite picture from today. Those two were having a blast playing the game together. We're all in the stage of learning to share and take turns. That picture is proof that we're headed in a good direction! Have a great week! I look forward to talking about the Dentist next week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15718365820422420760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455286052291098215.post-57701969870143840882018-08-29T13:38:00.000-06:002018-09-05T13:41:19.939-06:00Tot School Sharing and Manners<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What an amazing day of tot school! Today we learned all about manners. We talked about the letter M making the /m/ sound, we did handprint art, read an M book, and made placemats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVLVtGiOH6WiwKpw739RgtRULv2tzIBgTxnVxAR5IWpg6l6hpd4eKYLyZbeMP_BFWYXEG33r29KS42Svl-AKgjlgJbxRDcmrWFw9VPQK83udY9TPqL7NlZilyd6-Jrr2xlGN8-D87ykfE/s1600/Tot+School+8-29+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1294" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVLVtGiOH6WiwKpw739RgtRULv2tzIBgTxnVxAR5IWpg6l6hpd4eKYLyZbeMP_BFWYXEG33r29KS42Svl-AKgjlgJbxRDcmrWFw9VPQK83udY9TPqL7NlZilyd6-Jrr2xlGN8-D87ykfE/s640/Tot+School+8-29+1.jpg" width="516" /></a></div>
We talked a lot about sharing and being soft with our hands and bodies. We played with play dough and Duplos. We also pulled out the number 1-5 mats and hopped on them the same number of times as the number that was printed on it.<br />

We had a delightful first day of the Tot School year. Our theme today was school tools and it was so fun to introduce a variety of items and start showing kids how to use the tools. We had blocks and play dough and the water table to get us started. I now have a class set of play dough scissors and I was able to work with multiple children today in showing them how to hold scissors. Of course, it's a skill that has to be practiced and practiced - today was just an introduction. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiRMQtVxG77wbdiYDeWNUEtSOSvpCv1hmFgTKZbrd_1ulRhztYmbCn6nA5FpV73DMEYJTsmP2aTyXR3vDUsQhTuJzy94A-Hcug7G1rw_RPb4Uzr4G-N2DhEGi2xf2E6JDcV1XIkmTfR5w/s1600/Tot+School+8-23+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiRMQtVxG77wbdiYDeWNUEtSOSvpCv1hmFgTKZbrd_1ulRhztYmbCn6nA5FpV73DMEYJTsmP2aTyXR3vDUsQhTuJzy94A-Hcug7G1rw_RPb4Uzr4G-N2DhEGi2xf2E6JDcV1XIkmTfR5w/s400/Tot+School+8-23+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
One of the fun aspects of tot school is that it is totally individually led. I set out a variety of activities and kids choose where they want to spend their time. When an activity is looking like the kids are done with it I put it away and get out something new.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2VmUv5ZtTiq1JepKONI3bZFUwATqp9CxPzXKTIkEl-Xit1anOnP0MKWSfMQi9zjf7mXzMrZJxt_fV-hRJVNZtgIjs_oxHHeALreR6XlARKiEkUhSBVPI2ZEockDzhSe8PNMpwVtxDjAs/s1600/Tot+School+8-23+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2VmUv5ZtTiq1JepKONI3bZFUwATqp9CxPzXKTIkEl-Xit1anOnP0MKWSfMQi9zjf7mXzMrZJxt_fV-hRJVNZtgIjs_oxHHeALreR6XlARKiEkUhSBVPI2ZEockDzhSe8PNMpwVtxDjAs/s400/Tot+School+8-23+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We also all had help in pouring our water today for snack time. As we practice more and more the kids will be able to do their own pouring. It will be a wet experience at first, but we always get better with practice. I love giving Cheerios for snack time accompanied with a pipe cleaner. Toddlers have a great time threading the cereal onto their pipe cleaner and it's wonderful small motor skill practice.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVR-LaZ6zcig1ZZLU1uRI9xpKD1z6IPzuOstvr6lk7uP6Boxk7IjVg_6nIb-z2Sc0L3inQ49uxQN_KO5h9gkeGHJvCppz7JIkMP6WW3wBOGxcni96GIAhJGWB2Xt_i-PMs7mQDvbjw23k/s1600/Tot+School+8-23+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVR-LaZ6zcig1ZZLU1uRI9xpKD1z6IPzuOstvr6lk7uP6Boxk7IjVg_6nIb-z2Sc0L3inQ49uxQN_KO5h9gkeGHJvCppz7JIkMP6WW3wBOGxcni96GIAhJGWB2Xt_i-PMs7mQDvbjw23k/s400/Tot+School+8-23+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
After snack and lots of block building we pulled out the paint. We learned about the dot painters first. They are great because they have easy to open and close screw caps. Then we moved onto stamps and stamp pads. I forgot how much training is required to teach kids the correct side of the stamp to push onto the stamp pad and then press onto the paper. Next came the paint and paint brushes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7I86s7YKlWAGfLhiYNx_4dNqHx-DFHAgm-1c6OeMXlFDKx85HtKOKQeL_cTlKyccp0jh19ydgPtu8VFXy7ZzkZyfa3zbd9O4riaTpKill8tMKvIXLxxkcSS44Z6hlsokRBfU8jt-ZzXE/s1600/Tot+School+8-23+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7I86s7YKlWAGfLhiYNx_4dNqHx-DFHAgm-1c6OeMXlFDKx85HtKOKQeL_cTlKyccp0jh19ydgPtu8VFXy7ZzkZyfa3zbd9O4riaTpKill8tMKvIXLxxkcSS44Z6hlsokRBfU8jt-ZzXE/s400/Tot+School+8-23+4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We got messy and really enjoyed our time together. We ended the day with story time. I pulled out a variety of board books for the kids to look at and made a class book with each person's picture and name from our class. When I read our class book out loud kids came running to see themselves in our book. I made a copy for each child and sent it home in their folders to read all week long. It was a great first day!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15718365820422420760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455286052291098215.post-46491693235786552682018-08-01T13:57:00.000-06:002018-08-01T13:57:07.139-06:00Tot School Summer Friends<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have had an amazing summer with our tot school friends. Today we got to celebrate all the fun parts of being friends. We started with a giant painting easel made from two 2x4 tables turned on their sides. </div>

My youngest (whom we call Arrow) is exactly like her brother. Man, I'm sure there is a blog post from 6 years ago where he has paint all over his leg as well.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Back to today: We also drew with chalk on the fence and I loved when one of the little boys declared that he wrote his name, so cute and proof that he's ready for the fall where we ramp up our learning of letters and writing/drawing.</div>

We also played with the parachute and a bunch of soft balls. The kids had a complete blast with this activity! Thank you for sharing your summer with me!</div>

What a lovely tot school we had this morning. We talked all about gardens and plants, which is a wonderful topic at this time of year when our backyard garden is exploding with growth. We "planted" flowers in play dough and took a tour of all the plants in the garden.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWF4oOLkM1uZPtihhH0yhgLrTrXttC4kizB98IzX3sFgfEIZI-sVYkK2NgubbbwTIDvb-dBUUA9dWII89OL_YiRVbWxC_hsuZ9ELzyK7rCOES4dRUi5tyUvfFpjwrTqbRomVPuHeNBUIA/s1600/TS+7-25+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1529" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWF4oOLkM1uZPtihhH0yhgLrTrXttC4kizB98IzX3sFgfEIZI-sVYkK2NgubbbwTIDvb-dBUUA9dWII89OL_YiRVbWxC_hsuZ9ELzyK7rCOES4dRUi5tyUvfFpjwrTqbRomVPuHeNBUIA/s400/TS+7-25+1.jpg" width="381" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We found tickly weeds and everyone got to have their very own - until they all fed them to the chickens :). There was a lot of bike riding, shopping cart pushing, watering can filling (though not watering, oddly enough), and plenty of play in the playhouse with the play kitchen.</div>

Tot School this morning was so much fun. We have a blast with the "Bugs" theme. It makes me happy every time I pull out the bug box. There were a handful of bug jars in our bug box that we put right to work. In our time together we caught a cricket, an earwig, a wasp, a spider, and a fly. This was amazing because we could look closely and safely at all the bugs and then eventually let them go (except for the wasp, the evil one we caught didn't survive and I'm okay with that).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXp0PnBnGow9dkRRnaIzoSyl8HRKIjxwjSXSdHk5Ua_YQZqFTlabppOBgetdk-_kwyHhiZkX4uQOzJ2sPu7ywOM270oFtSFeNBoJc8lJH3ZwmBjlGB5UcipuO_5pEVw_Z9CpgySJUapIo/s1600/Tot+Bugs+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXp0PnBnGow9dkRRnaIzoSyl8HRKIjxwjSXSdHk5Ua_YQZqFTlabppOBgetdk-_kwyHhiZkX4uQOzJ2sPu7ywOM270oFtSFeNBoJc8lJH3ZwmBjlGB5UcipuO_5pEVw_Z9CpgySJUapIo/s400/Tot+Bugs+1.jpg" width="400" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bugs theme lends itself to some exciting art opportunities. We made bug "rings" out of chenille stems by twisting them around my finger and then bending the left overs like antenna. They fit as an over-sized ring for the toddlers that way. Our most time consuming art activity was a footprint butterfly. I did this years ago when my older boys were young and I was excited to make a matching footprint art for my youngest. They turned out super amazing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnMva_G5weUq3DN1uTXWplWi9DEb__73dtv2PNRwY4xM9dK12i0Sj7Mlz5H-lDSVP6Y7tGrz7Xu1Y2UBpQb6joqYUjD2bSjK9a4XYovZhzpsvrpGkRY-e-jFvnPlHu4LMazMMyIhrqdQ/s1600/Tot+Bugs+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKnMva_G5weUq3DN1uTXWplWi9DEb__73dtv2PNRwY4xM9dK12i0Sj7Mlz5H-lDSVP6Y7tGrz7Xu1Y2UBpQb6joqYUjD2bSjK9a4XYovZhzpsvrpGkRY-e-jFvnPlHu4LMazMMyIhrqdQ/s400/Tot+Bugs+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also painted plates red and turned them into ladybugs. Painting with toddlers is always an adventure. One child is grabbing the paint end of the brush and has completely red hands, the child across the table is asking for a baby wipe for every small paint on skin incident, and the child diagonally wants more paint every 3 seconds. It's kind of like... well... painting with a group of very young children. I'm pulled a thousand places at once wiping up as much paint as there is placed on the paper. I guess it was worth it because after tot school was over my daughter carried her two art projects around the house for at least 20 minutes before I convinced her that they needed to be set in a safe place for lunch time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIjCfjFk8PdRHM3fzxQ6xd-Q5h-_3Y9YjFdAOWFPQV22oGA_iTwrnee368NkcqTxPoFBl-ZwjE7gxPIqdp0s8IYHPn-wRgQSFihyphenhyphencicthyphenhyphen2audaB6C57t6IKBFyAZ-qWlO1JfEPE9sTOE/s1600/Tot+Bugs+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIjCfjFk8PdRHM3fzxQ6xd-Q5h-_3Y9YjFdAOWFPQV22oGA_iTwrnee368NkcqTxPoFBl-ZwjE7gxPIqdp0s8IYHPn-wRgQSFihyphenhyphencicthyphenhyphen2audaB6C57t6IKBFyAZ-qWlO1JfEPE9sTOE/s400/Tot+Bugs+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and talked about all the different foods that the caterpillar ate and how he turned into a butterfly in the end. Of course there was a smattering of splashing in the water, playing in the sandbox and playhouse, and using squirting bug toys to water the tree and "paint" the fence. </div>

We had a blast this morning in tot school. Our theme was Summer Fun and we were able to play all the fun summer activities! We splashed in the little splash pad and used it to scoop water to be delivered all the way across the yard to the sandbox. We fed the bunny and played a lot of "pass".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYryHO4k6t_3kB_maBdTGw4ujWtyi3fNYS1lbYcajpLv_I1Jwp22m00VzV9wFhL_ze4H_eajqFtkX6FLL4j3g_vt7iOhlucBZrHJ8fROS4S3lGbbBQui1wqZAxgWsccbIFPzeu72sDoQU/s1600/Tot+School+7-11+1+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1415" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYryHO4k6t_3kB_maBdTGw4ujWtyi3fNYS1lbYcajpLv_I1Jwp22m00VzV9wFhL_ze4H_eajqFtkX6FLL4j3g_vt7iOhlucBZrHJ8fROS4S3lGbbBQui1wqZAxgWsccbIFPzeu72sDoQU/s400/Tot+School+7-11+1+%25281%2529.jpg" width="351" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We took a short break for snack and went back to playing play dough and in the sandbox. We pulled out the second water table and found a few boats in the toy box to play with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
All the toy kitchen tools came in handy while we played in the playhouse and used the water table and sandbox to do serious toddler "work".</div>

We encountered songs about Lions, and Gorillas, and Bears, OH MY! We laughed and explored all morning! Some of our favorites included eating broccoli and graham crackers (YES! Broccoli!). We spent a lot of time practicing climbing on the climbing structure. It'll take more practice before they can do it on their own, but they are getting stronger each day!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We played with play dough A LOT today. We kept it out the whole time. I usually put it away when it is left for something else, that didn't happen today. We played with the little splash pool and a little bit with the sandbox and playhouse/toy kitchens. It was such a chill class today. Everyone was happy exploring in our little part of the world.<br />

We sang nursery rhymes all day (I may dream in nursery rhymes because we sang them over and over). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYGy2-LmQq-6WHGzLKtRFar92PEk4pqqkn5u8V-F7psROd6OhyphenhyphenkeRJwpNGX_cGWWM68xil9dIsyhXLgr5GF15c2fpE18P2R8DELnwnUKqqPqb7QBiLukez8WZXrI7jx-KEAlWHm9b5WGA/s1600/Tot+School+6-6-18+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYGy2-LmQq-6WHGzLKtRFar92PEk4pqqkn5u8V-F7psROd6OhyphenhyphenkeRJwpNGX_cGWWM68xil9dIsyhXLgr5GF15c2fpE18P2R8DELnwnUKqqPqb7QBiLukez8WZXrI7jx-KEAlWHm9b5WGA/s400/Tot+School+6-6-18+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We had a lot of fun learning the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme. Here's how I do it with toddlers:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dxHpeCmA5oSWtyMSzlqUtdcrBX8aPQp_a4roPrpY0QtelNSTBdFsRqYT9UguC-WRXxBOFh9NyrmlLfQzyJa0A' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
We played play dough and blocks. We learned to sort the dog pictures from biggest to smallest and we played a lot with the water table, sand table, and toy kitchens.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz5qYZqIEYJ57APuY9M5OliU-JdBXuu-lUsheYIFLCW9zOv4D2EeIEQD_OOnQSVeHbxk1P-BpfRT-LDuQABgn4mKtEtNpM8btiDfsbP2C_2oK6VHCZBEGJ_MrCHMTgH4Tyl2n6qYfVF4g/s1600/Tot+School+6-6-18+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz5qYZqIEYJ57APuY9M5OliU-JdBXuu-lUsheYIFLCW9zOv4D2EeIEQD_OOnQSVeHbxk1P-BpfRT-LDuQABgn4mKtEtNpM8btiDfsbP2C_2oK6VHCZBEGJ_MrCHMTgH4Tyl2n6qYfVF4g/s400/Tot+School+6-6-18+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The kids loved the bunny and learned to pick clover from the grass to feed to him. We also worked on climbing and played in the playhouse. We had a fantastic time singing and playing together!<br />
